Important: Lifeline Free iPhone does not process applications, approve eligibility or ship devices. The Lifeline benefit is administered by USAC under FCC oversight. The free federal application lives at CheckLifeline.org. Anyone asking for payment to guarantee approval is a scam.

Quick eligibility checker

Answer three questions to see whether you likely qualify for Lifeline. Your answers stay on your device - nothing is sent to us or any server.

The application

Four steps from “do I qualify?” to “phone in hand.”

Follow these in order. Every step links to the primary FCC or USAC source so you can verify us.

    Confirm you qualify

Lifeline is one benefit per household. You qualify through either (a) participation in a qualifying federal program such as SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans/Survivors Pension, or certain Tribal programs, or (b) household income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

    Gather your documents

Have one program-participation document (SNAP letter, Medicaid card, SSI award letter, VA pension letter, Tribal program letter) OR income proof (prior-year tax return, three consecutive pay stubs, Social Security statement), plus a government-issued photo ID showing your name and current address.

    Apply through the National Verifier

Complete the free federal National Verifier application at CheckLifeline.org. USAC - not any private company - decides whether you are approved. Most decisions arrive instantly; ones needing manual document review typically take 1–10 business days per USAC processing times.

Pick a Lifeline provider & request a device

Once approved, enroll with a Lifeline provider that operates in your ZIP code. Device availability, exact iPhone model and any co-pay depend on the provider, their current stock and your state - Lifeline itself does not ship phones.

What to have ready

Documents USAC actually accepts.

Have clear photos or scans of these on your phone before you start the National Verifier. Blurry, cropped or expired documents are the #1 reason for manual-review delays.

Proof of program participation (any one)

  • SNAP / EBT approval letter or benefits statement
  • Medicaid card or coverage letter
  • SSI award letter (SSI only - regular SSA retirement does not qualify)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA) statement
  • Veterans Pension / Survivors Pension award letter
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs, Tribal TANF, Head Start, or FDPIR letter

OR proof of income at or below 135% FPG

  • Three consecutive current pay stubs
  • Social Security benefits statement
  • Unemployment or Workers' Compensation statement
  • Divorce decree, child-support award or similar official document

  • Tribal ID (front and back)

  • Military ID

How your data flows: You upload documents directly to USAC at CheckLifeline.org and then to your chosen Lifeline provider through their own secure portal. Lifeline Free iPhone never receives your Social Security number, date of birth or benefit documents.

After you’re approved

Choose a Lifeline provider that ships the model you want.

Approval by USAC is not the same as receiving a device. You still need to pick a Lifeline provider that (a) operates in your ZIP code and (b) currently stocks the iPhone model you want. Availability shifts weekly.

Application FAQs

Straight answers before you apply.

Is Lifeline really free?+

The Lifeline benefit itself is a federal discount of up to $9.25/month (up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands) applied to phone or broadband service from a participating provider. Many providers use the discount to offer $0/month plans and free or low-cost devices, but availability, iPhone model and any co-pay depend on the provider and your ZIP code. Lifeline is not a device-giveaway program on its own.

How long does approval take?+

USAC's National Verifier makes most eligibility decisions in real time. If manual document review is required, USAC's published processing target is up to 10 business days. Device shipment from your chosen provider is separate and typically adds 5–10 business days.

Can I get more than one Lifeline benefit?+

No. Lifeline is one benefit per household - not per person. A household is people who share income and expenses at the same address, whether related or not.

Do you approve applications on this site?+

No. Lifeline Free iPhone is an independent editorial guide. Only USAC (via the National Verifier) can approve or deny Lifeline eligibility, and only your chosen Lifeline provider can enroll you and ship a device. We help you understand the rules and pick a reputable provider.

Which iPhone will I get?+

There is no guaranteed model. Refurbished iPhone availability varies by Lifeline provider, your state and current stock. Our device pages list which models commonly appear at partner providers, but final assignment is at the provider's discretion.

Do I have to pay anything upfront?+

The Lifeline application through USAC is 100% free. Some Lifeline providers charge a small shipping or activation co-pay for premium iPhone models; others ship at no cost. Any fee should be disclosed by the provider before you check out. Never pay anyone claiming to guarantee approval for a fee - Lifeline eligibility cannot be bought.

What happens if I get denied?+

USAC's denial notice explains the reason. Common fixes: upload a clearer photo of your document, submit a different qualifying document, or update your address to match your ID. You can reapply immediately after correcting the issue. Our support team can walk you through the fix - call +1 (888) 316-0921.

Is my personal information safe?+

When you apply at CheckLifeline.org, your data is handled by USAC under federal privacy rules. When you enroll with a provider, they receive only the information required to verify your Lifeline eligibility. Lifeline Free iPhone does not collect or transmit your Lifeline application data - the eligibility checker on this page runs entirely in your browser.
